Omega 3 DHA: Preterm Births

600 mg/day of the omega 3 LCPUFA DHA can increase maternal and newborn DHA status, gestation duration, birth weight and length. This phase III, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial was conducted between January 2006 and October 2011.

Prenatal DHA Reduces Early Preterm Birth, Low Birth Weight

University of Kansas researchers have found that the infants of mothers who were given 600 mg of the omega 3 fatty acid DHA during pregnancy weighed more at birth and were less likely to be very low birth weight and born before 34 weeks gestation than infants of mothers who were given a placebo. This result greatly strengthens the case for using the dietary supplement during pregnancy.

Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies March of Dimes amends its supplement recommendations to include omega 3s for pregnant women

The March of Dimes suggests that pregnant women consume at least 200 mg of DHA every day to help support fetal brain and eye development. After the baby is born, DHA omega 3 fatty acids consumed through breastfeeding may also help support mental, visual and motor skill development, Dr.Fleischman said.
